Behind the business: July 2023

Running your own business teaches you more than you could ever bargain for. I’m fast approaching 6 months of running this thing and there’s so many lessons learned I want to distil into reminders for myself and newsletter posts to share with you.

I’ve decided that each month I’m going to give you a peek behind the scenes of how we’re tackling challenges, and hope that it serves as a helpful guide on your own entrepreneurial journey.

Big wins for June

• Handed over the website build for Movendo who are an on-demand, customisable and sustainable furniture startup I’ve been working with! Will share the link when it launches!

• Started working with formidable founder Michelle Lu @ Semaine on their digital experience

• Experimenting with different propositions and what I can offer clients (will share more on this when I’ve locked this in)

• Getting closer to an agreement on a project I’m ✨really✨ excited about

Biggest lesson learned

As a founder, it's all too easy to become a slave to your calendar, being led by incoming tasks and commitments. Here's the silver lining of being a small business: this is okay. Unforeseen tasks will show up and demand your attention.

You're still mastering the art of anticipating and planning for these wildcards. Embrace agility and adaptability as your best friends. The game-changer for me has been systematising key activities that help grow your business like outreach and building a brand.

This allows room for project work, while also keeping the unpredictable nature of the startup world in check. I started this journey with a clear vision of my ideal week. The reality? This is a lie. There’s no such thing as an ideal week. The ideal week is the one where you keep the main thing the main thing.

So, I've rearranged my schedule, compartmentalising it into brand building, project work, daily routines, and essential relaxation/recharge time.
